…I genuinely don’t know what to say here. What was even the point of all this? Why did Yamaoka accuse Yuzan of cheating? What’s with the torture-style slapstick at the end? This mini-arc just feels like such a nothingburger that I can’t even get that angry about it. I’m just baffled.

What even is Yuzan yapping about over the rice? Didn't we have that whole chapter with the minister and companions of rice? Are we supposed to understand that the minister failed to do anything about the rice?

Also, I know this bro's been weird about stuff before, but I am curious about what Japanese "high quality" rice actually taste like. I been to Japan, and the standard rice in regular restaurants is just rice. No different from the jasmine rice I usually have at home.

To have a segueway to lecture us on the taste and scent of rice, obviously. The excuse is that the "aromatic" rice would affect the way the food taste, because "flavours" are partly affected by your sense of smell. But the main point of it is just so both sides can yap about the taste of rice and how important it is to preserve the flavour of Pure Japanese Rice (TM). The American rice is just cheaper, but Japanese rice is More Delicious (TM).

The torture slapstick just happens at the end of the chapter every now and then. I guess it hasn't happened in a while, but there's been many chapters where it ends with Yamaoka suffering or being beat up. Like back with the chapter of the baseball player who eats garlic for energy, the slapstick at the end was Yamaoka gets hit in the face with the ball so hard and had to be sent to the infirmary.

Lads can we call this Japanese exceptionalism? I have tasted Japanese rices, it's way too mid for such an insane price. They arent even a main producer of rice.

It was more rhetorical, but absolutely on both counts. I'm mostly just frustrated because these three chapters were just so...meh. Like, there wasn't anything particularly awful about them apart from their use of the same tired tropes we've seen before, and it just feels like nothing was actually accomplished. Even Yuzan left Yamaoka with a vague warning about rice that makes me convinced we're coming back to this later. It just feels like they wanted to start the side dishes mini-arc, but they only had three chapters left in the volume, so they came up with Yamaoka's loss of smell as a way to artificially "end" the arc so that they don't have a multi-parter split between volumes.

I think it depends on your local palette. A chain restaurant in my country use japanese rice and it gain popularity because the rice is better than local rice

I do think its interesting this is the first time they bring up " We need to discuss how to get good japanese rice AROUND the country "(A topic we have discussed across threads, the fact Kariya will often go " Well, they need to eat this natural thing " without going over logistics or how to freight it.) and then Yuzan goes " Well, we can discuss that for hours, lets go back to the food. "

DUDE, NO, THE FOOD CAN WAIT, FOCUS ON THAT, EVEN IF YOUR TAKE IS BAD, LETS HEAR IT.

He's soooooo close.

(Also as a aside, my favorite rice is jasmine, so I am firmly on the aromatic rice side of the fence.)

Literally, yeah. Like he's often going all "Modern factory made stuff bad, traditionally made stuff good". But okay bro, how do we get enough of those traditional stuff to provide for the whole nation?

Also since I always have the jasmine rice and I don't know how "non-aromatic" rice compare, I wonder if there's that big of a difference LMAO. There's "Japanese rice" here, but it's obviously just the same breed grown locally. It will taste different from that "actually good Japanese rice". I would be even more mad if Kariya was yapping shit again and it actually barely taste any different.
