First things first, I'm glad that ultimately there was a happy ending for everyone. I get that some people might think that's a cop out, but a character does not have to remain "dead" for the story to be a good one. Ultimately, it seems like everyone was struggling in one way or another, and the author in a sense did a decent job hiding everyone's inner struggle and made us think there was something more sinister going on, when in reality this was a story where everyone was wrestling with their own internal struggles, doubts, and insecurities, as well as the guilt that they were holding over Mi-chan. Lot of red herrings and misdirection, but I think they were done well enough to not consider it too cheaply done.
I won't deny it though, there are quite a few unnecessary portions to this story. First off, there was absolutely no need to make everyone a couple. The only real coupling that made sense was either with Sahara with Ren, or Sahara with Chiaki. Felt ham fisted and forced to couple everyone together. Gyaru girl choosing to be with the Otaku seems out of nowhere, and the build up to that was also extremely weird. She was so unnecessarily sexual or coming on to him for no real reason story wise that it made no sense and just left you wondering why she even did that. I get that the Otaku was spiraling, but there was no need for her to kiss him to snap him out of it. Also, I can see Ken liking Chiaki, it was subtlety hinted, but Chiaki in no way showed any real interested towards Ken in that way, in fact she seemed almost completely uncaring to romantic type of relationship and the only person she even outwardly said to love was Sahara. Although, that was most likely a childhood friendship kind of love (but who knows what the author truly meant with that). Regardless, at the ending the implications however made it seem like they may become a couple, which makes no sense honestly. Honestly, I think Ren and Ken made a better couple, they're both sporty (as Ren was shown having a trophy at home for Karate or some kind of martial arts) and Ken has soccer. Sahara and Chiaki would have been my choice of end game relationship for the main couple.
Also, one of the other biggest criticism I have ... Otaku boy and Ren had almost no bearing on the entirety of the story, to that if they both were written out of it, the core of the story wouldn't have changed. The actual plot of the story actually revolves around Sahara, Chiaki, Mi-chan, and Ken, and the accident that every single one of them blamed themselves for. Ren, to a degree, is forgivable to be a part of the story as she was still very much an important person to both Sahara and Chiaki, but she too could have been written out and the story wouldn't have really changed too much at the core. I thought that Otaku boy and Ren would have bigger roles in the core of the story, but it turned out they had nothing to do with the core part of the story, and they were there only regarding Sahara. Furthermore, we spent SO much time on the Otaku and Ren, that it seemed more like the characters themselves were used as a distraction or a red herring to what was really going on. I don't know how I feel about that. Overall, still a good read, and nice twists, but not without its flaws. I also would have liked it if we got a more interaction with Mi-chan and with Sahara and Chiaki after she woke up, but oh well.
