@Jorelm Well, even some MMOs do have premade character designs for classes, so those can be genderlocked sometimes I guess. But this is about a type of game that's completely fictional and all right now so drawing real world comparisons is significantly harder. I can think of reasons why they would set it up that way for games like this though. Where people can potentially get a glimpse of or a feel of another person's body, or visit areas that are only for men or women, like an onsen (it's a Japanese VRMMO, no way they left out their communal bathing obsession in this particular series when it's in basically every novel, manga, or anime ever).

@Jorelm Also, it seems for OSO it's pretty enforceable. Reading between the lines, the way OSO generates characters is by scanning your body (like the Kinect) and then using that image to determine gender, physique, etc. Though, I'm not sure how character creation works, but it seems to just "prettify" your actual body or something (which would make sense, if only people's height didn't change).

@Tropingenie I guess that's right, who knows what kind of sci-fi witchcraft they use. But personally, I wouldn't want to play a game that forced me to play as myself.

@Jorelm Agreed. IMO the reason people play MMOs is to be someone else, so OSO's game logic has a fault there. At least in SAO got that part right.

afaik in korean or chinese VRMMO, they BAN you for a day (in real time) at least in novels
how's that for penalty, not to mention those games ARE NOT F2P, they USE REAL MONEY for subscription, not to mention items

It seems like the MC is the type to not play games much so it would be understandable that he thinks getting a poison when trying to make a better potion is a "failure". He is basically "game stupid", he might have common sense in the real world but since he knows next to nothing about games, he doesn't get what might be good or not. It is probably also why his friends keep ragging on his choices. They think they know everything about this game since they have been playing the beta, you see it a lot in gaming spaces. I don't think the friends think the game devs made trash skills on purpose, but that the skills are not balanced well. It is common for games, especially online games, to rebalance things a lot within the first few months. I still agree the friends are being dumb though, just because some skills might not be perfectly balanced, doesn't mean they are trash or useless.

I don't recall anymore how far I read this manga, but it wasn't probably very far. It rubbed me the wrong way from the very beginning. "Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki" is the other series, which has a kind of similar setting as far as "useless skills" go, but it works better than this, which is why I'm still reading it. It also has its own annoying traits, but they are more like matters of taste, not as much poor writing as in this manga.

I mean this is VRMMO tho... Kinda different with common MMOs, i mean u can do some pervert thing with ur avatar u know if u play as the opposite gender.
