The issue here is that, as stupid as he is, he is also... kinda realistic in an annoying way. That's the problem he has had a successful life, he has a list of very impressive achievements
But they don't feel like things he should have achieved knowing how much of a dumb loser he really is, he doesn't behaves like the competent evil mage he is supposed to be, he is a doofus that doesn't knows what he wants or even how to get what he wants, and then lashes out towards women, but it doesn't even makes sense why women are his target when his peer and other men also ridiculed him before he even managed to get married, even his psychological complexes are all over the place
It does not matter how successful overall he is, he is obsessed with one goal and no matter what he does it only has worth if it pushes him towards that one goal.
As idiotic as he may be, he knows how to work the crowd. He did get a political marriage, and was able to convince everyone he was a great guy and Laplace was evil for three centuries, even being cozy with and manipulating people in power.
And he blames a group of people for his failures. Now, this one is targeted around females, and since the whole story seems to be males vs females it feels very much forced. But unfortunately many people just blame a group for their issues regardless of if they are even related to it or not.
Seemed to me like the opposite.to answer your first part it's all of those things. at first he wanted to be recognized/respected more then others and he heard that making weapons would do that. this made him thinking that the ultimate weapon would be the way to be recognized as the best. he did so and got what he wanted from it. however he then realized that fame and being respected dont mean squat when youre dead so he wanted immortality so he could always bask in that praise.
His research had always been about immortality, but without showing something successful in all that time studying he would lose his position. So he went into what was popular, weapons, and got famous for it all and Laplace's issue.
But his goal had always trully been about immortality.
