Like I thought, the Orcs are German. However the Elves are Danish? I guess that this is something like how the first Schleswig war was a victory for the Danish (elves) while this is the second Schleswig war which was a victory for the Germans (orcs)

I believe the equivalent of the 1st Schleswig War was the war 120 years in the past that the orcs lost, and this is basically gonna be the 2nd Schleswig War where Elves will loose, most likely because they committed ethnic cleansing on a very valuable element of their forces.

I didn't quite parse that chapter. He presented a tabletop game with the SCENARIO that 70k troops disappeared, is that right? Then this mattered to the dark elf MC because....it was a simulation of what they just experienced?

No, what he was worried about is that she might be offended by the fact that everyone in that room was practicing at killing her and her people as part of their invasion of Denmark.

Also, the guy who was going "wah wah fascism" in the first chapter discussion can go sit on an upside down stool with this map of essentially pre-Seven Years War Europe.

70,000 was the number of Dark Elves that were on the border before they were killed by the white elves. There are only around 12,000 left. The Orc army thought they would have to fight through the Dark Elf buffer in case war broke out.

I think he is mirroring the Nazi Germany move into Czechoslovakia prior to a full war in Europe, what White elves invaded was more of a DMZ zone and getting rid of the buffer state. Turkey just used this excuse to invade part of Siria a few years ago. This would be a predecessor to going into the Orc territories with the goal of attaining resources. As an isolationist nation Elfind probably has no idea what the Orc territory is actually like and thinks they will be able to just walk in and kill 'the inhuman enemy'. This would be similar to initial attacks by Japan into Asia to spread its influence sphere and build resources for a larger conflict.

It is kind of refreshing to see Orc's not be the bad guys for once.

Well well well... In the previous chapter, I was wondering what kind of enemy a flourishing nation like Orcsen - despite having achieved peace, industrial revolution and different races close unification - could possibly fear, to feel compelled to maintain such an advanced and powerful army?
Now I know.

Hope this manga will carry on, cause I'm a big sucker for Bismarck-era military tactics transposed in heroic-fantasy civilizations. Can't wait to see where this is going...
