Is it just me, or is it very occasionally foreshadowing that the war isn't going to go quite as smoothly as planned?
It might also be questionable translations that keep subtly hinting that the elves are going to turn things around despite supposedly not being prepared.

If you want to go this route, history is literally written by literate people/scribe, then they get published, so people can read and judge/study it.
Who you think the one letting the publisher do it?

I won't touch on the fan fiction written by survivors whose words start with IF ONLY or BELIEVE ME or I WAS THERE WHERE EVERYONE DIED, who, most of the time, are people writing from PTSD without a concrete proof, war stories from false/personal biased story/just want to boast about being a war "hero".

If I were to take a guess about the gatling gun thing, it might be due to the fact that we're dealing with meat and bones rather than metal. In other words, they'd be more difficult to aim, stabilize and also could damage their bodies from firing them due to recoil.

Or the author didn't think about it.

The recoil would destroy their (hollow, bird) bones; also the gatling guns probably weight the same as the eagles themselves, so not possible to fly with them
