Marriage is, itself, a formality. Part of the point is that it is a social and legal commitment that can't be trivially exited! If she didn't want the strictures of formality she should not have gotten married, and stayed as an unwed couple.
After he got physical with her none of it matters one bit. She owes nothing to him or to the institution of marriage with the abuser.

Does anything indicate it was even physical abuse, and not some other kind of abuse? Regardless, there's no such exception clause in the law or standard vows.

If the husband expects the law to be respected he shouldn't have done what he did. The panel where she is on her butt in front of the door with her glasses on the floor beside her implies he pushed her out physically, as well as the act of preventing her from entering her home. I don't know Japanese laws but I assume some backwards third world crap of treating your spouse like that is illegal too. So if that's true in my eyes she owes no one to diligently follow marriage vows.

That may be how you feel about it, but she still has to try for divorce. It's a serious commitment, you can't dissolve it with one slap.
