It was a thematically strong story of two broken people. Yumezora by her tragic history of sexual violence, and Gomi maladapted, and gripped by porn addiction. There's been many manga of the virgin becoming neurotic about relationships and sex when finally faced with a woman interested in him, other manga will play it off as comedy, but this I feel like this one conveyed it the best as sex being almost terrifying for him.
Despite him demonstrably being a complete degenerate, stealing pads, rape fetish, the author did really well at conveying how and why he got to that point, which humanized him just enough to keep me reading. He was rightfully punished by losing his job and seeing the horrified expression of his only friend and person to stand up for him. Often when a character is so degenerate in manga you question whether the author is just projecting their fetish, but every time his deviancy came up, it was conveyed in a perfectly horrible way.
The flashback of Yumezora's upbringing and the unhealthy sexual attachment she had to violence really brought her character around. It explains a lot of her behaviour and why she became so attracted to Gomi after seeing him jerk off to her pads. She probably expected him to abuse her too as part of her unhealthy attachment style. The manic way she acted, showed affection, and how she saw sex as mechanical and animalistic felt very real based off her experiences.
I think the scenario of her death is the one thing that bothers me. It felt like the author going for shock value by setting up their escape and then ripping it away, instead of giving her a proper ending. I could tell was probably going to die after she berated Gomi when she lost her wallet. It signaled that she was still had that capability of abuse to start the cycle over again. She also went through so much more trauma than him that may never have been healed. But her dying from a sudden murder suicide, and then Gomi creating a manga from his story as their "child" felt completely out of nowhere. The panel of him sticking a knife into both their throats is compelling though, as it physically "closes the cycle". Maybe the sudden and brutal return to reality and consequences is he author saying that you can't just run away from it.
It definitely has it's faults but the low rating of 5.8 just tells me that people cant handle unpleasant protagonists and unhappy endings. I imagine many people just gave it a 1 star after she said she was married.
