Lets be honest, the only reason people put up with Hinaki’s constant cock blocking is because she’s a cute girl.

If we ignore the past few chapters since her personality got reworked she was a horribly selfish emotionally unstable manipulative monster. Thankfully, they toned her down and she doesn’t gaslight as much.

She was a unironically one of my most hated antagonists and I felt that was intentional, I felt they did a great job making her as horrible as possible… But when I went to the comment section, whoo boy was I told I was wrong.

Some thoughts:

Premise-wise, I like this - you have your three friends, two of whom are slowly becoming a couple and the binding friend who really doesn't give a crap about all this love stuff and is the BEST friend of both sides of the couple leading to this complicated relationship dilemma of how you manage such a group dynamic. You can explore how does a friend who has 'perfect information' on a relationship react to the fights they have. You can explore how they must try to maintain a tight bond when hormones are flying and the couple could just ghost the friend, too absorbed in each other. What would happen if you introduced a 4th person who tried to put a wrench in the couple's relationship and the friend is effectively the guardian angel. Probably most interesting - what do you do if the friend, late into the game, starts to develop feelings for one of the other two and due to personal issues started to become malicious. With her 'perfect information' she could easily manipulate the relationship one way or another, it'd lead to interesting drama.

What we actually end up with is a trope festival, after a trope fight with a trope setup of 'got lost in the crowd and separated' as well as a 'those shoes broke and she's now so vulnerable, someone carry her!!!" trope just as a cherry on top. All this with character that are all showing insane levels of one-dimensionality, the chapter devolves to like 6 shots of MC just staring at them blushing out of his mind.

I hate-read this manga at this point, because I really, really, really dig the premise, it reminds me a bit of White Album 2. But the friggin moment to moment writing is so godamn horrible it's actually impressive. Like it's not an insult to intelligence like Nisekoi or anything by the hack Seo Kouji, it's just... boring. The author has ideas, but just doesn't know how to materialize them in an intelligent way that would be even remotely more engaging than some subtle faces the characters make that 'hint' at some depth that doesn't really turn into anything that would be worth actually writing about.

Anyways, cya next week for the next rant of how "this manga could be so good, yet is not".
Well, to be fair, Nisekoi never made the slightest attempt at being serious, it's pure fun and ok with it. Kouji mangas often do, with catastrophic results, no doubt. I have to say, though: you were actually interested in this because it seemed to be in the vein of White Album 2?

Kimono girls hit different. Lol at Hinaki slapping the lovesick out of Shunsuke. And then stealing Kiyoka. And then taking Shunsuke for good measure. RIP my man lol.

Next time: What are those two doing, away from Hinaki?

Debauched outdoors kimono sex, of course. It's Tomover.

these single digit brain cell people can't really think anything without being homo. Hinaki loves Shunsuke but she doesn't want to admit it. i don't think Koiwai has any chance here. this manga will probably end with Hinaki realizing her feelings for Shunsuke. the title literally says my childhood princess.

One property that hits your desired premise well is I Became Friends With The Second Cutest Girl In Class. Unfortunately, it moves so slowly that the WN is only starting to get into the "late in the game" entrant some 250 chapters in, so, God only knows what decade the manga adaptation might actually get around to it.

Yeah! Sure, WA2 ends on a very questionable note, but the initial premise was interesting. Love triangles tend to be fairly one-dimensional. Girls fighting over the guy's attention etc. WA2 was cool precisely because it wasn't a love triangle from the get-go, but gradually turned into one. Though this was just part of it, outside of the premise I found some of the lines by Koiwai very interesting, since they hinted at some unusual depth of character. Of course, it's not quite panning out that way at this point heh...

… I still feel like labelling Hinaki's sort of love for Shunsuke as 'romantic' is a severe oversimplification. If anything I still lean towards the platonic end of things with her, actually. It's definitely beyond simple friends, but there was nothing romantic about the way she saw him, and her worry was never about having him as the one or the sort, but rather the status quo. It was the discomfort of losing this constance in the form of Shunsuke, whom she was comfortable with, due to romance, which she hated.

Which I think brings me to my other point in that neither Shunsuke nor Kiyoka really knew what romance was to begin with. They're dabbling with these unknown clusters of emotions, these new experiences, and they feel different things, but decide that all these feelings are what other people consider 'romantic', which led them into thinking that they're in love with each other, which fed directly into Hinaki's insecurity all the more.

Granted this may just be me over-reading things due to how subtly and childishly they behave around one another (never quite behaving like my friends in love nor anime characters in love, but somewhere more juvenile), but it's what I feel from them so far. I just can't see them take romance seriously due to the serious lack of experience, and I think the idea of the manga, to begin with, was these kids facing this crossing of their discomfort and learning what romance and friendships mean.

Also, how does a local summer festival cause bring Japan's world-class cellular network to its knees? Elsewhere that doesn't happen in musical festivals with around 75 thousand folks in attendance :wtf:
Just like how the geta strap always breaks, making the couple go to a secluded spot right before the fireworks start.

I'm following the manga for that, so far it's been a fun read. No idea what point it's in compared to WN, tho

The manga is just past the point where Yuu busts in to Maki's place yelling for Umi like a girl whose best friend is trying to get ahead of her with the boy she likes while pretending to herself it's just about "friendship", so somewhere in the mid-40s.

Hinaki deserves to have fun! She worked hard and didn't fail her classes! But it looks like in the rush to have fun with Shunsuke and Koiwai, she forgot that they're not as active as her. Now she's starting to have doubts again...

Koiwai looks great in a Yukata! It seems one of her Geta is broken. She really does have bad luck with footwear. Good thing Shunsuke was there to help her! But because Hinaki was eating snacks, she wasn't holding hands with both of them. And now the three of them aren't in contact anymore.

I hope that Hinaki doesn't fall to her negative thoughts, and that she can persevere and find Koiwai and Shunsuke without much problem!

We're counting Hinaki as male, then, I suppose.

I'm sure the yuri faction enjoyed pages 4-5 if they still exist. I'm going to forgive the use of the broken geta strap romcom trope here because I like Kiyoka and she's winning at least for this chapter. Let me have this. There's still plenty of chances for Hinaki to mount a comeback if she realizes she's in love.

I swear geta makers in manga are making low-quality straps on purpose, maybe to help a little with Japan's shrinking birth rates and increasing numbers of weak male leads in romcoms.
