isn't it done with incense, normally (hence the smell)?
Nope, the moxa is the fluff from the leaves of mugwort. Mugwort (yomogi) is also used as an herb (yomogi sweets, yomogi udon) so the smoke is fragrant. It’s kind of minty? Or like the scent of tomato leaves, a little?
It’s often used in combo with acupuncture. So. Probably not supported by research, but been around for a thousand years

Thanks for the explanation, or this would have been very confusing.

Alternative medicine, huh?

It's all hocus pocus mumbo jumbo bullshit without scientific basis.

Any perceived benefit is purely through the placebo effect. It's all in the mind, in other words, but... if mere belief in its effectiveness helps alleviate symptoms, then I suppose it's not a bad thing.

I'm just not a fan of that alternative or "traditional" medicine junk.
