Or, in a more optimistic sense, a case of that triangle trope being lampshaded with Rei becoming actively supportive of Youta instead and helping to push them

I think the author was more poking fun at that trope by having the jealous group immediatly get blasted with cold water and the MC just shrugging them off. Plus, I doubt that was an accident. Remember she decided to guard him from annoying girls back when she learned its bad to use him to get closer to Rei. I bet she just played it off as an accident in order to spray them and get them to back off. She's still crazy but decided she needs to be on genuinely good terms with him and never use him for Rei access. (Even a broken clock is right twice a day lol)

Rei is already supportive of Youta getting closer to Houjou. Though pretty passively for now.

Did you forget a couple earlier chapters? Tohno was happy with the attention at first. Betrayal after betrayal where the girls dropped him like used tissues the moment they saw a chance with Rei did, and rightfully so, traumatize him. It didnt last until graduation either, the girls remembered Rei and kept trying.

Not all attention is equal, you are severely misreading Tohno's situation here
