Well... his ex girlfriend was a gold digger whom treated him like a simp and currently he's not looking for a wife and is trying to be a good dad sooo possibly
So, how much did the city lord pay Reda? The seedy merchant offered a platinum coin. Surely the right to become the lord's sister's friend wasn't everything he got from the city lord. And one dinner he couldn't even eat in peace due to the women fighting over him left and right (literally).

How did starting a school get in the way of trade exactly? Seems like a very vague motive considering how extreme it is to try to assassinate the sister of the local lord.
that guy was responsible for the curse, he should've known he needed a priest able to use "dispel", not a healer. at least he cast the curse himself instead of making someone else do it, that was awfully convenient to find the culprit

I'd wager that the merchant guy had no idea what the curse looked like when it was in effect. He probably just used some black market item or such, to cast it in the first place.
He's also stupidly arrogant and arrogantly stupid, like all generic one-and-done villains in manga like this, so that helps too.
