In what world would a wager over a ship, which neither party is the registered owner of, be recognized as a valid wager? Is this sacred tree retarded?
Blame the writing. Plus people have placed bets on trivial things before. I have no doubt someone bet on something they don’t own.

The entire premise of this chapter (even if it pays off later) is pretty stupid. Contracts, magical or otherwise, don't let you bet other people's property. Even an idiot would know that.

I assume the Tree letting you bet things you have no right to is a feature, not a bug. Magically enforced systemic corruption.

The guy wasn't experimenting; he already knew it would work. The Tree just seems insanely biased in favor of anyone already part of its system.

I assume there'd be an absolute disaster on hand if the guy had known to demand Luxion as the wager and not the kingdom's ship.

what the heck is with this system? "swear on the sacred tree" and everything is allowed, even the posession of others? why did nobody ever ask for ruling the kingdom then? just do a minor duel and get anything for free.
Because the ruling elite can rely on the tree to win. Tree likes humans with the sigil and will pretty much help if they are in dures.

Republic has gotten rich from being functionally unbeatable on it's home turf due to the tree.

Can we just get rid of his Sister? Like it's a great story but she's so garbage of a character it's making me hate my own sister 😭

She changed enough that I'm okay with her.

Her chosen husbands though doesn't change no matter what. Everything that they have been through, you would think their personalites would change or their preceptive would evolve like how her's have.
Like she actually working hard to get somewhere and then her husbands keeping tossing that all in the trash. That is so freaking offputting.

Swear on the sacred tree
We will accept the duel, but the ship...

This is either bad writing, or the sacred tree is not very sacred. It's common for oaths made on anything sacred to be prefaced with something like "I hereby swear this oath on the sacred whatever." Yet this "sacred tree" accepted the duel before they were even able to finish their sentence, let alone actually swear on the sacred tree.

The tree is foundation of this country. It favors a small selection of people it marks. This gives that selection of people additional powers beyond magic. With it this doofus was able to beat up one of Marie's chucklefucks (who are VERY good at fighting) like it was nothing.

This creates your typical scenario from proverbial dating sim of terrible nobles lording over the heroine with their bullshit power. It's just that this time MC group is on the recieving end.

And yeah, it is INCREDIBLY unfair. Even in manga characters are stumped that it worked because they themselves said it was not theirs, but the tree has it's favourites.

The reason that a rando can't get the whole Republic is because the rest of the elite are also tree favorites so they are more likely to loose if they tangle with those.

Yes, this is veeeeeeeeeerrry heavy handed, but a typical trope in these kind of settings.

The one thing to consider is, why was Luxion included in the bargain. Not like the boat in question is Luxion's main unit. Nor did Piere and his crowd know of his existence.

It's sacred because it protects the country, grants it a VERY important export and it's favorites say it's sacred so shut up OR ELSE.

Oh absolutely. The system is very fucked in hands of bad people. In the borders of the Republic, as long as you aren't facing another favorite of the tree you can basically do whatever you want if you are favored by it.

I think in the novels some other fuckos kill another student besides Noele who was looking after Holfort exchange students because worst of Azeri Republic are VERY xenophobic. Enhanced by the fact that NO COUNTRY can really fight the Republic on it's own turf.

Leon will receive a sacred tree sampling that replaces the current one soon.

Not replacing current sacred tree, it's the other way around. The current sacred tree would try its best to get rid of the sapling, and Leon would take them to one of desserted island back in his kingdom, as one of the tree's function is to filter out pollutant. (If my memory served me right)

The problem is not that it's unfair. It's that the way it is portrayed is nonsensical.

For example, if Evil Noble Guy would have simply said "the sacred tree allows me to do whatever I want, so your ship is now mine", much less people would have complained. Certain people have unfair advantages and privileges, yeah, it happens.

But instead, the story wanted to present this as some kind of devious move on Evil Noble Guy's part, a tricky way to cheat the MC out of his property. Except... it was neither tricky nor smart, since the terms of the duel made no sense whatsoever.
