But they’ve presumably never been dead at the same time, right? Pretty risky to end up doing so on a whim. As for tragic turns the story could take:

someone loses their memories of the other person
they learn that the loops will stop and panic about their future after spending so long looping and forgetting a lot
one of them exits the loop before the other, maybe the looper has to substitute with someone else in order to escape
the loop progresses to looping the next day instead, after one of them is injured or killed
melancholia plot
