To be fair, you can't really prepare to a threat you never knew existed. They had no reason to assume anything would do that, there really isn't war between humans in this world as far as we know (or I remember) and the other threat are karu that are not smart enought to do that and the magic barrier would stop them, they don't even have a night watch or something lol

Sure, but still wouldn't stop ladders or digging… I'd assume the main thing this is defending against are Karu. (Even more so after learning the witch suffers from severe misandry). As the USA recently discovered, stopping humans with an unguarded wall only works if those people weren't really motivated.

I think that the Empress being alive made Kanejo immortal, or she would just resurrect him. I forget. Them not going to kill him now, is that Youta barely defeated him once with a bamboo sword and the aftermath of that was Kanejo murdering his mother. So he needs time to prepare. He is here to gather information. And to fuck.

No the witch alive keeps his seal active. If the witch dies. he will awake. But Youta feels too weak for him right now and wants to gather more information about him. Thats why he's doing this quest now because that new witch is really old and might know something about Kanejo.

I assume that Kanejo did all that. They haven't said yet why men are like that, if they're manufactured, or just immortal either.
