I am willing to forgive a lot, but just having him and that rando 13th Seat alive both fly in the face of the whole "if you kill the king the whole bloodline will die."

I really hate it when authors explicitly state rules in order to create tension, and then break them whenever it's convenient for the narrative.

If I had to throw out an educated guess it's probably because their bloodline has two rulers. Even if Crimson abandoned the bloodline he's still no less of a Monarch. That or, more likely, what was meant by that line is that a bloodline without a proper Monarch can't add new family members and thus is destined to slowly die out like an ant colony missing its queen.
