I cannot share those screenshots without the permission of the groups involved. The groups have declined to be named for understandable reasons, namely that they feel some in the community might attack them for being "whiny about trolls". If they choose to come forward and share, that's their decision.

Staff decided to make this announcement thread in order to raise awareness of the issue and make it clear that while having a conversation with groups about how their delay is affecting readers is fine, harassing them and going so far as to send death threats is absolutely abhorrent behavior. We can't control what happens outside MangaDex but we hope that the conversation here has helped people realize that reader entitlement is a problem and needs to be confronted.

Of course the anonymity of the said group is important, but while a death threat in the internet is highly likely, making an announcement like this without any proof whatsoever makes this feels more like a publicity stunt if anything else

it is.
"kys fag" isn't a death threat lol
Mangadex whining about random internet trolls saying random mean stuff to random groups (we don't even know any kind of detail whatsoever about this "issue") and even using it to gain sympathy from readers is just... I don't know. funny.

"It has recently come to staff’s attention that some scanlator groups have been receiving some very nasty emails and death threats due to group delays on MangaDex."

I wish everyone involved in this thread would die. Approximately 80 years from now. In their sleep.

Seriously though, I've wanted to vent about this for quite some time, so I might as well do it here: I believe that any delay above 2 days is unnecessary, above 7 days silly, and chapter-withholding to be next to brain damage. But, well, what do I know, I'm just a scanlator...

@hiphopopotamo you could just ignore all those "mean comments" (lol) from random trolls very very easily, but nope! gonna make some drama about it, teehee!

How insane and entitled must one be to issue death threats over free Chinese cartoons?

Whether or not one classifies such things as realistic death threats or not, they're at the very least bullying, which is potentially psychologically damaging. Also, it's worth noting that different individuals can have different tolerances for such things.

Of course, it's unsurprising that on a site as large as this, there are those that behave poorly, but that doesn't mean that such behaviors are condonable. I appreciate the admin of the site for coming forward to admonish this behavior and hope that something can be done to somewhat alleviate the issues caused for the particular groups that are the target of such terrible ire.

I can’t believe some people can’t handle making a few clicks to go on the scans sites to read.... seriously.... what has come of the world.

it’s hella stupid to be sending death threats to the scantlators who spend their time and money (to buy raws in some cases) to provide us readers with translated chapters. Can these ungrateful readers be more respectful to them?? Even if they take much longer than usual, you can just looks at the raws and try to understand, if not just wait patiently. Don’t be a douchebag and go around harrasing them just for delays or hiatuses. Their lives don’t solely revolve around translating. Lots of them are still studying but here they are, helping us non-jap/korean/chinese etc readers by providing translated manga for us. Please, respect them more

then instead of making such a big wuss over it, go solve that specific harassment privately or maybe you can just... you know... ignore them.
this is a very embarrassing and meaningless announcement

bloody hell. this makes me mad and sad. why can't people appreciate the work these groups spend their time in to provide everyone chapters and feel the need to act this way.

however good a system there is, it's always users making it go wrong, even here. D:

MD isn't being harassed so there are no harassers for us to ignore, and I'm sure you realize we can't just ignore feedback from scanlators.

On the one hand, I do understand some peoples' frustrations with the release delay. Having a delay of two weeks for a chapter bracketed by Patreon ads can feel like a really scummy practice of trying to exploit readers' love for the series into ad or donation revenue, as well as taking advantage of MandaDex's respect for scanlators by using it to increase traffic.

On the other hand, death threats and harassment (assuming that said 'harassed' and 'threatened' scanlators aren't just calling any criticism harassment, as has happened before when Batoto was still a thing) are not the right way to get that point across. Communicating that displeasure civilly I can understand, but taking things to that point is not in anyone's best interest.

In light of all this negativity I would like to say a HUUUUUUUUGE THANKS to mangadex for hosting all this content and an even bigger THANK YOU to the scanlators who work their ass off doing all this for free or donation.

I don't care if it takes you guys one hour, one day, one week or one year (or more) to release a new chapter, I will wait because I don't pay anything so I shouldn't be so whiny about it anyways. Furthermore if you guys want to delay release on mangadex so readers would visit your site then I feel that is not a big deal. Do whatever you want, as long as it doesn't involve pay walling a new release or forcing people to register an account on your website.

@Zephyrus

Engaging in this kind of activity could result in your account being banned from the site - but we'd really prefer it didn't come to that, and that we can all just keep reading the manga we enjoy instead.

But like...why tho? Why would you prefer not to ban obviously garbage people? What possible benefit could keeping awful people here do for the community?

@Teasday then those scanlators can stop being whiny ass and handle them privately/ignore them, dummy. geez, you guys.
I bet $100 it's Jaimini whining about readers whining about their stupid delays and you (mangadex) don't want to lose them for whatever reason.

Posting threats or bullying of ANY sort should not be tolerated IMHO. Groups do this for the love of it; not for some entitled asswiper. Count my vote for zero tolerance = instaban!

Considering there are groups who will rip all their works off mangadex to try and get traffic to their sites I honestly really appreciate the delay system as an effective compromise. Plus the fact that the releases regularly show up in my follows, even if it's a chapter behind, reminds me to check their website for the newest chapter and keeps me going to their site more regularly than I would with a bookmark or RSS feed.
