I'm actually suspicious about that Finnish research. Have been following their twitter, and aside from the claim in their pinned tweet, there hasn't been anything substantial or further news about said research. (That being said, their accolades certainly seem without reproach, but we need peer review here!)

this is probably stupid and obvious, but wouldn't they just need 6 branches in total? Then they just have to break them in 3 far enough away places to triangulate where the source is.

They all slit their throats and committed suicide to become Returners. Touya (and Haito, by inferrence) just happened to cling to their human sides when they did it.

I know the dude isn't actually bad, and he is still trying his best to keep Touya safe.

He's just been living as a soldier for too long and he knows he has a duty, so he has to be extremely strict and stay distant despite actually wanting to take care of Touya.

... But I just don't like him, he just feels annoying...

I don't know what it is but he just feels like someone I wanna put on mute and swipe past whenever an image of him pops up (I don't actually do that because I need to read the story though...)

But yeah, he just isn't hitting it for me for now.

Maybe he'll grow to be more likeable eventually, but right now I just wanna see him disappear.

Not necessarily dead, but just gone, like just give us anyone else.

I honestly find him about as annoying as Einstein when she's being a misandrist...
