I could write a book on my reasoning behind it, I'm observing this for a few years now, and my biggest concern is that a lot of mangas are left in the dark completely ignored because of the rating's.
Now I won't elaborate behind all the rating's, but I'm positive "mostly" everyone is aware of this problem. The ratings here are not helping anyone, on the contrary!
I would like to suggest mild emoji reactions, or just completely remove manga rating, because it escalated to spite voting. Giving either 10 or 1.
So dear MD if you guys value and honor even a tiny bit of the japanese authors manga, (I'm sure you do) you will consider this proposition.
Thank you for reading this.

Why stop on ratings? Let's remove genres, they exist only to confuse and misguide the weak minded!
Demographics are sexist. It is 2020, we should cast aside this notion of preferences based on gender and age.
"Dropped" is evil, everyone must follow every manga without exception.
Descriptions are often riddled with spoilers...
Stats are inflated...
....
........
...........
...............

Thus, I propose to remove the very concept of series and chapters. Every comic on this website should be uploaded as a single, nameless entity.
Without a way to distinguish one series from another, every manga will have a change to get noticed!

Yeah, you are right!!!!
I believe in a system when everybody can enjoy every manga without cares about ratings!!!!
A system when everybody is free to have his/her score!!!
A system for the people!!!! And by the people!!!! A system free of the tyrany of the masses and their awful ratings!!!!

Dont take us seriously, just trolling a bit cause we are bored.
The issue with the ratings has been discussed a lot of times already.
The general concensus is that its really hard to balance, cause there are a lot of people who put 10s on everything they like. And 1s on what they dislike. Nothing can be done on this matter, since everybody is free to put the score they want without need of justification.

If you ever publish said book, I will unironically read it.

Yes, because a free website which collects massive amounts of unsanctioned non-Japanese fan scanlations is the best way to show respect to the glorious Japanese manga creators,
as opposed to spending real money importing expensive Japanese raws which most MD users can't possibly understand.

It's not like MD admins are going to implement any measures against Zero-bombing or review inflation anyway, people are entitled to their ratings and while i agree that there are some manga that shouldn't have scores so low or others that i would consider overrated, i'm only one person.
I'm not going around rating mangos i've never read, hell, i don't usually give a rating to a manga i'm reading unless i'm pretty far in my reading progress, of course, there will be people who give random ratings to works who's first uploaded chapter is barely 50 seconds old for gits and shiggles and i think it's weird, like, why would you do that, but it's fine.

if you guys value and honor even a tiny bit of the japanese authors manga
It's not like we're pirating this stuff, right? Even if we didn't and MD had a deal with them, i wouldn't read works that i wouldn't like in the first place.

I think it's a stalemate because i don't believe it would be a good idea to remove or change the rating system to something much simpler but also a rating system allows for some works from certain authors to be higher than the works from less known ones. I'm sure most of us have the same manga on our lists because they're popular.

People who use the ratings to decide if they will read a manga or not, will not be deterred by the lack of a rating system, they will just find it on some other site and check the ratings there.

The Rating system could be improved but if you were to remove it entirely how would someone know whether it's a good idea to spend their limited time on the manga, perhaps the comments. Because that's where the people who want to spite or complain about the manga will be. Doing the same thing they were doing with the ratings.

Additionally I fail to see how a rating system disrespects the japanese authors. Is it simply by judging them, which people do anyways, or is it because some people won't give it a chance from a low rating. Because the people who won't give low rated stories a chance are going to be the first people to raise a huge fuss if it's not there. And they will just go to other sites to get a rating before choosing.

Edit: as a note, I don't pay attention to ratings at all.

Dumb people who only read popular stuff will keep reading popular stuff.

People who read everything will keep reading everything.

Oodles amounts of aged but brilliant quality mangas (most of them outshine what we have today) have little to no views because of the rating system.
The root of the issues is that certain mangas have 9/10 from fans that flocked over from LN/WN/anime streaming sites.
Even manga's that were voted 5/10, after getting an anime adaptation suddenly got up to 8/10.
Just because of the popularity of an adaptation that has nothing to do with the manga's worth itself....

So what does the reader do besides filtering the genres? sort it by views/popularity/rating and updates.
First three already kills the aged mangas because of the voting system, and because the manga is lets say either finished or just older than 3 years the update sorting does the same thing to it.

But the main problem is that the reader gives the benefit of the doubt to random anonymous voters and not the author, artist not to mention his/her own opinion.
If you still fail to see how destructive the voting is on this site, (where unfinished small unknown mangas should be getting more attention than already extremely popular ones)
I will just conclude this post. After these fatuous comments perhaps it's already far too late to bring some quality to this site.

Quite unfortunate. You would think a group of readers could have a standard constructive conversation about...well anything surely. Nope... not on mangadex...

I don't understand how this is even supposed to help anything at all because like the people above me have been saying the ones who only read the popular series will still only read the popular stuff and the ones who already read everything are already reading everything regardless of ratings. If anything this just seems to be a rant because a series you love isn't as popular as you'd like.

I've found that the least polarizing manga tend to have the highest ratings. I try (key word try) to rate manga objectively. Even if I thoroughly enjoyed a manga, if it lacks good storytelling, character development, etc., then it won't get a score as high as a manga that excels in those aspects. But the general userbase doesn't rate manga in that same manner.

Maybe an addition to Mangadex could help older/underviewed/unrated manga in becoming more appreciated. Introducing a 'review corner' of sorts to each manga page might help, where users could read reviews for each manga, written by people who (hopefully) actually care about rating manga thoroughly and justly.

Something like that would of course be a lot more work for the mods, though. Having to worry about moderating the influx of reviews would be time consuming, but I'm sure that they could find an adequate method to implementing a useful in-depth review system.

Good to know, I probably should've checked beforehand lol. Since Mangadex is actually run by one guy on multiple sockpuppet accounts, it might be awhile until we see new features.

unfinished small unknown mangas
Well there's your problem, they are small and unknown because they are new/unfinished, not every manga is created equal, even if a masterpiece 10/10 God created manga was uploaded here, unless people see it and talk about it, it will stay in the dark. Then, if, for example, Akira Toriyama (nothing against him, it's just the only famous mangaka i i can think of right now) decided he would make a Fantasy-Isekai-Shounen-Romance-Gyaru-Loli-Harem-Smut-Ecchi-Drama work about black haired dude who collects whamen like they're pokemon and respekts the shit out of them, of course it would be popular, not because the manga is any good, it's absolute trash, it will be popular because of its author and their fanbase and fame from previous works.

Who know what, if you know some unknown masterpieces, make a blog or a thread.
Me and the 1% of guys who care about that kind of stuff will be happy to read them.
But 99% will still don't care and you can't change that.

The problem isn't the rules, it's the people.
