'Ach, Hans, run! It's the [MATT]!
-mtg, revised

it feels to me like the main point of this arc is 'what if someone doesn't come to save you' for Tifa. It's like the thing with her clothes and falling out of the tree. She's got no real concept of what actual danger is like because her family consists of basically the strongest entities alive. Of course, since it's never happened before she's really insecure, but FORMERKING X is here to help out! He's totally not your dad tifa! Really!

it's going to help round out her development to be more self-sufficient.

I feel like we're kinda going around in circles. If it weren't for the serious tone, I'd think this was supposed to be a comedic running gag.

What I mean about going in circles is a bit more literal. Since chapter 31 they've:
1: Got spotted
2: Used magic to fight back
3: Run away
4: Got spotted again
5: Disguised themselves
6: Got spotted anyway
7: Fought back with magic
8: Run away
9: Got spotted
10: Disguised themselves again
11: Got spotted anyway again
12: Run away
13: Fought back
14: Run away again

They keep trying the same things, and they keep not really working. 😛

I get that having Tifa learn of real danger would be an important character development, but I don't see how this is going to accomplish it. She says "I've decided I'll never be captured again," with dead eyes like she's determined to do things herself, and then proceeds to get captured, and is seemingly just fine with it since she's playing board games with her captures shortly after. From the start, she's jumping in to save someone else, and says that she'll go her own way if it gets too dangerous, but never does.

Perhaps it's just me, but rather than the lesson being "Tifa learns her place," I'd be much happier if she ends up saving the day with her own strength and showing that she's capable of growing up and making her own decisions.

I love this manga but what the fuck, it feels like the author doesn't have a clue as to what the outcome will be, dragging this arc on for way too bloody long.

This little arc is dragging on for what feels like forever, I understand that it's partially meant to expand on the girls character and introduce some more backstory on her father's side of the family but it's boring and taking too long.

So to start: I agree that the events are taking rather long to progress. Though since I read Bookworm I have more tolerance for the slow plot I guess.

So anyway, aside from introducing the new characters I think the whole point of this whole mess is essentially having the dad find the new king (is he the younger brother or cousin? I forgot), and possibly Sean/mage guy (the ex-party member) find Tifa and then reunite out of necessity to exchange the two (because neither should be cold hearted enough to abandon the person they went to rescue, even if it's the wrong one)

They established that while these two are together, the tracking amulet doesn't work because of interference.
Then made both dad and mage worried enough about their long absence to go out to search such that the moment the two get separated (this chapter) and the signal works again, each of them will bolt towards the first reaction they feel.
Since the two established the boat at the port as point of rendezvous, using the reason of limited time they have + the enemies around, it'll also force each of them to basically escort the person they found back to the boat to wait for the other one.

And that's where we are.

I actually don't mind slow pacing. Wanna watch 2001: Space Odyssey? I'm down with that. Got a 3 hour long progressive trance mix? Sign me up! 😋

My original comment was about the rising and falling of dramatic tension. I feel like maybe the editor could have taken another pass at it, because there's so much back and forth, between being in mortal danger and oddly taking it easy and chill. I'm not saying that every story needs to have a gradual building of tension that approaches a climax and then resolution, but in this case, I feel like there have been so many twists that they've lost any sense of surprise.

there's about 5 more chapters in this arc, but a timeskip after that. It seems like this is the conclusion of the 'setup' portion of the story

@ApolloX1209
don't be silly, it's DADDY X, A GUY WHO DEFINITELY ISN'T DADDY
