more like "modern person making use of modern knowledge in a medieval fantasy world". Most people did not eat well or have any real variety till the last couple hundred years. This society has a market and plenty of food but it seems wheter due to food just being a necessity or being mostly accessible to adventuerers quality food just never really sprang up.

People definitely ate well throughout history, no one wants to eat bland nutrients unless they absolutely have to. When people had the means to they splurged on exotic spices and foods just like they do now. This is just lazy writing.
