I feel like it isn’t really a case of “not good with someone appreciating her skill”, I think it’s more like “too much appreciation for something so small feels like it’s out of proportion to what is actually done”.

Maybe. But she wasn't just throwing things together for an obligation meal. She was measuring and taking more than casual care at cooking. The praise might have been a little overkill, but the meal was over the top for the circumstances imo.
