Her mother said the debt was illegal, and without that, they have nothing on him. So he could've refused. He didn't have the spine to do it, but he could've. But at least to me it felt like he did prefer at least most of the deal over rejecting it.

I think it would've been better to reject the deal, and then ask her to make a personal request, without any pressure behind it. He's still have accepted that, but it'd be a much more fair proposition.

That scene where she hugs him and says those pretty words right as he's crying made me think this would have been better and with greater potential as a dark psychological manga. Just imagine her manipulating the fuck out of this guy as she isolates him and cuts him off from everything he once knew. How emotionally dependent he would become and just the dark undertone of it all. Would have been a better read I think.

And I think I stayed much longer than I should have just because the trope-inversion of "the yakuza debt-lender is actually nice" was pleasant to me, and because the title and first chapter raised my expectations for this series having laid-back characters when instead it's full of psychos. >.>

Who is she? How does she know him? Why does she even give a damn about him? It’s obvious he’s never met or even talked to her, he said so himself. So what’s going on? There has to be a catch. And considering they’re destroying his house, it wouldn’t surprise me if they plan on changing records and erasing his existence to begin with.

Speaking of which, he lost his family, his friends, and now the house he’s lived in all his life, all of this in the span of a couple hours, goddamn. He obviously isn’t ok with any of this, but he knows he can’t refuse, even if it is technically illegal, these people obviously have tons of money and power, who knows what they might do if he didn’t accept considering she was the one who requested all of this. I don’t trust her, especially not the way she tried to comfort him, it felt so detached, so forced. Just affirming her ownership of his existence, reinforcing the belief that she’s all he’s got, it’s would be gaslighting if it weren’t true.

I mean, it wasn't much of a threat. 'If you say no, then you have to be my butler!' As if he couldn't just say no to that as well. She may have taken care of that debt, but she doesn't really have any power going forward.

The debt was illegal but they settled it with money. They are powerful and are using their power and influence to intimidate him into accepting despite the colorful wording and romcom atmosphere. Ignoring everything else, they still paid a huge sum of money for his sake and he, being the pushover that he is, does not have the mind to refuse. The wording is pretty clear that they are expecting him to bend to her whims in exchange for what they did. The daughter is explicitly not treating it as a good, altruistic deed.
Of course they have power. They have a ton of power even if there's no real legal basis for it and the transaction is null and void in theory. The author could not decide whether they should have some sort of debt-motivated relationship or if she's a benevolent savior making both aspects of it lukewarm at best. This could have been potentially good if it was executed it better.

...are we sure she isn't a psychopathic predator? Her reaction to his crying - "Don't be afraid, I'll always be with you" - wouldn't have been out of place in a darker story.

Also uncle is head of a national police bureau and the mom flat out threatened the yakuza bro to abuse their power if they didn't back down. They gave whatever they did to them in the envelope that would largely cover the loss, in addition to Kaede also said the debt would also be paid itself.

MC probably realizes there's a LOT of power/leverage in the situation and he's under their control no matter what. It wouldn't be shocking if she's the "staker girl" trope as well and knows everything about him.

I'm going to keep reading more to figure out what the deal with the grandparents and what lawyer mom's role is. Some Zaibatsu/conglomerate family trope surely, but if it means goofy affectionate powerful grandpa trope I'm all for it. Probably my favorite character trope is the powerful grandpa who is a eccentric funny guy. I hope that's where it goes.

On the next go around let have the have the well meaning yakuza members demolish they debt, cause the boss' daughters wants the MC, and then power harrass him into with well meaning intentions.

Instead of this...hypocrisy.
