Are you talking about the last page? I think it's because the "mysterious benefactor" is a joke of a character. He's the former chief of the diplomacy office before they got dissolved because they used Yoshida as bait, giving her a fake letter, that she ended up delivering. He ended up getting hired by the information office and the rest of his office got hired by the postal office. They were also in the smoke signals chapter.

Honestly, given his character, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason he's helping the mages is that he has some kind of Machiavellian scheme to get his office back.
