I tried to make it sound more as if he was making up excuses, since he was just using pretty words to make his actions seem more reasonable, but if he really had an issue with that, he could have just spoken with her directly instead of running away (I'm sorry if the language doesn't reflect it, I tried different versions and this is the best I could come up with). She's strict, but not unreasonable, she isn't going to work you to death. The most likely scenario is that he thought he could escape from a little girl and if he was caught, speak his way out. The chapter was more focused on demonstrating that she is capable of handling herself even in these situations rather than portray her in a negative light.

@Lecarm That's interesting, then. That cart certainly doesn't look like it is full of coal, at all. Is it possible for it to be used to refer to things other than coal, too, or is the drawing just that much different than what it should be? If it is coal, I stand corrected on that part, but will maintain that it isn't a reference to "black lung" for the other reasons previously stated by me (along with your other translation notes, in this comment). I will also say that I hope he shades in the coal in the future (though I suppose he isn't that interested in removing confusion for readers of English scanlations).

@feha Assuming that Anna is so ahead of her time and uses the same system that we do today, he gets a 15 minute break on hour 2, a 30 minute break for lunch on hour 4, a second 15 minute break on hour 6 and gets to go home at hour 8. I'm inclined to believe that is the case considering that no one else, no workers or the boss, has complained about that at all to a 10 year old girl.
