I can't even call it "cheap". The Japanese are well known for endeavoring to make "perfect" products as to not dishonor the craft, and bullying's no exception-- Japanese bullies are a different breed.

I believe the word "that" in his mother's line "I didn't tell her about that." refers to the fact that he went to jail, so effectively she only talked to Shiika about the what (mother and son not living together), not the why (his sentence).

You sound pretty sure, is this an adeptation or something? Or are you pulling these out of thin air?

There's only one more chapter out for the raw and this isn't an adaption. However, there's the description and how people tend not to understand what these words mean. Revenge and atonement are different in the way that forgiveness and redemption are. One is something that is done to you and another is something you do. If the crux of the story was about her getting revenge, then there is no atonement. The story is supposed to be about making up for their past wrongs.

Anyway, a lot of the assumptions that have to be made for her to be ploting revenge requires her to be an actor of varying levels, good enough to really sell the emotional moments with him but bad enough give away that she's hinding it all from the mom. If everything the author presented was a trick like this, it would be a different genre.

I'm gonna take a wild shot in the dark here with my prediction:

I think; she was actively seeking out his family, to try and atone for her dad's actions by trying to replace the sister, but the MC is going to go on this gut feeling as if this is a revenge plot and it's going to result in a huge misunderstanding on a deeply disturbing level.

I'm hoping for closure for both of them, but I am really interested to see where this goes.
