Somehow, I'm still in the "something different is about to happen" camp. I dunno why, but letting him restart through any kind of death feels like it'd change the story too much. Like, the lake was supposed to be symbolic of what's important to him from the beginning. If he can suicide any time he wants, he's just like a demi-human from Ajin all of a sudden. Or maybe it just feels too obvious.
I could be wrong, though. Looking forward to finding out.
