There was definitely a lack of communication and respect. You need to respect peoples feelings and communicate things properly to make sure they are understood. They simply did not tell him about this at all. They assumed he knew. The father likely dropped the ball since the mother mentioned it to the daughter years ago.

I think leaving the village has more meaning then punishment though. The cryptic warning seemed more to do with natural consequences than punishment. One of those "the outside world is full of rape ghosts" or "there's a barrier around the village that curses you if you pass through it". You know, the usual stuff that should be properly mentioned but becomes watered down to the point its no longer useful information.

people are talking about how he can talk his way out of it but meh, talking doesn't seem to work since it's already been decided. Arranged marriages being common in a culture isn't something you just talk yourself out of. This isn't modernized America, this is akin to classical conservative culture.
