Scheduled Updates For Old Completed Manga :rejected:

Home page only shows recently uploaded; old finished manga would never get uploads, which means little to no views, rotting in the archive.
There's no point in hosting manga if no one's gonna read it.
With an infrequent "dummy" update (biyearly?) old manga can rise to the homepage momentarily, gaining much needed traction.
Update is infrequent to ensure it doesn't steal the spot of new fresh manga, but also make sure new manga doesn't damn old manga into obscurity.

This is one of those things where the root motivation for the suggestion has some merit (promoting older manga that no longer get updates) but the proposed execution isn't that great (create visibility with fake updates bumping chapters to the frontpage).

These dummy updates won't be happening because they would both unnecessarily mess with our chapter systems and not actually be all that effective anyway. Surely there must be better ways to achieve the actual goal.

For example, one idea that was floated around, at least a while back, was allowing people to buy "ads" to promote whatever titles on MangaDex they wanted. Not with like arbitrary image banners and such that we've had during April Fools, but just a promotional widget on the frontpage simply displaying the manga title and cover, and maybe a short blurb and/or a message saying who promoted it.

I think we should maybe float the idea of users promoting titles using "mangos" and see if the general public like it...

How about allowing users to showcase their favorite manga on their /user/ page (before the MD lists)? maybe have two slots if you choose completed series, but only one if you want to display an ongoing series?

or maybe have the maximum amount of cumulative follows/views limited, so you can put more unpopular manga? (have the count be on a logarithmic scale to avoid people abusing it and bloating their pages?)

Reading it again these don't sound that good anymore...
People rarely go to other users' pages (aside maybe for releasers)

one really simple idea is to just add a widget in the front page displaying random manga titles no newer than, say, a year or two or so - meaning, only titles older than a year or two would be shown in the widget, prioritizing ones with moderate to high rankings, as well as no rankings at all.

IMO i think there's plenty of old mangas that haven't seen a new chapter for years, even in batoto. like, have you seen a new eng scanlation of baka to test, Grenadier, or maoyuu? and those never get the attention of groups because they're quite old mangas (especially Grenadier. that's from 2003. kids who were born at that year are now at high school. those who read it are now 20-30-year old old farts mostly too buzy with work or studies like me)
