With that flashback, I kind of get the feeling that Leonard didn't even actually defeat the monster, he just lost to it and got possessed by it. So Kyle mentioning the "true identity" of the dark thunder could be him recognizing the possession, in which case I hope Kyle just exorcises it and makes Leonard lose his trump card, turning him into just a better-than-average thunder guy (but still an asshole).
