I never understood that thing about "playing a tree" in movies/anime/manga etc

Is it only in movies we see that, or in actual school plays it's also the case? Because, you know, if tree doesn't do anything, why not just pu decoration and not waste precious actor and manpower on something that will only worse general experience? Why tree have face anyway? It's not some magical fairy, it's just a tree!

@Med1um Generally, the reason someone is playing a tree is because there's too many people but it's a school thing so everyone needed to be included somehow. That doesn't really make sense here, since if that was the problem they wouldn't have needed him in the first place. I guess he was also an understudy for the other guy though since he seemed to know the lines well enough until the part where he decided to ad lib to cover up his allergies.

Oh, that actually makes sense! How could i never thought about such a obvious thing? Thank you.

Well, i would still despise school for that if i would be forced to play a freaking tree :)
I mean, it's one thing if you don't play at all, you will unknown (not bad, not good). But playing a freaking background decoration is completely "loser stigma", as if they want to point a finger and laugh at person who is not good enough for better role.
Well, i guess if scenario have some kind of... i don't know, singing chorus of the trees in the forest, that makes it atleast not completely "background", but actual role, it would be ok, i guess.
But if not - it's definitely not "taking part in collective activities", but just plain harassment from the school that force it on poor kids.

I mean being forced into a role is just not great, no matter what part you're playing.
I do however want to add that in my school play I played a tree so well the audience literally gasped when i moved at the end for the cast farewell.
