The guy leaves his friends behind just because the girl texted him and you can tell that he really cares about her.... I think he's at least going to be confused about how he feels about her. Maybe in the end he'll realize he's pansexual. But I'm 100% sure that this chapter set things up for some kind of confusion between those two (maybe one-sided from him).

Or maybe author goes completely in opposition of that and make him realise he's aromantic and/or asexual, but it would be less interesting in this setting imo.

I wonder what his distance with women comes from? Regardless of sexuality it’s strange that he wouldn’t even physically comfort his friend.

I think it's more of internalized heteronormativity - it's less accepaible to touch people of another gender platonically because it's easy for it to be seen as a romantic advance. The current MC remarked that he still behaves around girls with more apprehension than around boys, even though he claimed/wants to be able to return the feelings of the gay guy.

Other than 'beards'/putting up appearances, i'd think it'd be better for them to stay friends versus esp since the current guy doesn't really have strong emotional feelings/attachments and the girl probably isn't gonna end up being bi versus them both 'moving on' in a way and just being in contact

As well as him having a reputation for being a 'playboy' too but i imagine he'd probably be more aware of that and try not to do something that'd lead to misunderstandings
