After portraying a bleak family outlook on him, I think it might lead to:

My life never really had much room for me to be liked so I'm cool with things turning to hate.

It's supposed to show his detachment to his other environments, meaning his choices more objective than others--->"let's not give up on us".

But let's see how the author handles this.
