It's crazy that he hasn't realized how absolutely lucky he is to have Novem. He should rely on her more.

Whatever happens, just let Novem handle it. She should be the party leader.

Don't even try, just get Novem on with the plan, she'll make all his dreams come true.

All he needs is to speak truthfully to her, like, once in a lifetime to set things straight, and everything will fall into place.
I feel like the entire point of the story is lyle working towards preventing this from happening.
Lyle wants to be more than that and become independant after getting kicked around for so long, even if he doesn't know how to do it and rock bottom self esteem. He was genuinely disgusted by the idea of parasitizing her forever

I rather dislike these sort of situations in stories. Completely breaks the illusion.
Here, let me drive the point home that the protagonist is not only spineless, but incapable of accruing faith. Oh yeah, riveting.
