While you're right as to the reason of his non-aggression, I think it's pretty obvious why he is the way he is? He's 37, he really admires her dad and has been at the company since he was 'job hunting,' so who knows how long he's been there and how long he's known her. It could be a long time. Listen to him talk about her dad in this chapter, he not only feels like he owes the guy for his job, he feels like he owes the guy for coming to realize something vital about himself. Going after his boss' daughter who's 13 years younger than him feels like a betrayal. The irony, however, is that the old boss clearly trusted and liked our boy here, and could even have been happy to see someone who listens and supports be with his daughter, because she needs that. He's even doing what he's doing because he's trying to honor one of the most important things her father told him: to be the kind of person who listens to those who need to be heard.

Also... I hope you're not talking about yourself there, cause that's an indicator of poor health rather than, like... age at that point.

Taking a dumb setup for booby comedy and making it emotionally resonant and compelling because of the male lead ? I never saw this coming outta this guy. Like this chapter, with him saying that these have been some of the best days of his life because he gets to be close and listen to her? That's an insanely romantic confession, and the groundwork had been laid for it since the fuckin' beginning and touched on consistently ever since. There's an effortless tragedy in how the guy sees himself that is never dwelled on, just mentioned in passing, from one booby comedy moment to the next. Dude says one of the most romantic things she could've ever heard, and doesn't even REALIZE it. We don't dwell there, either! It just moves on to her reaction!
