I am fairly certain Kate didn't mistake the door but hid on purpose. Unfortunately we didn't get to see how she looks without soot.

maybe she's just bones and soot and touching her would reveal it?,,, altho i guess she wouldnt say she's not made of soot in that case ... there's bound to be something clearly not-human under there tho
