It feels like half (if not all) of her issues would fix themselves if she had more physical activity, enjoyed some outside time, got a boyfriend/girlfriend. She's feeling tired all the time doing nothing precisely because she's doing nothing - it's a vicious cycle (the chapters where she stayed cooped up inside ruminating and only thinking about chores). The lack of physical activity just amplifies this exponentially. Her poor mental state is also related to that.
I am not saying that she doesn't have objective purely pragmatic challenges that she needs to overcome - like not having a stable job for example. But her being paralyzed due to her worries getting amplified out of proportions, is mostly because she doesn't take care of her physical and consequentially mental health.

This manga is one big oof.

If any of you find yourself relating to it too much, go find professional help immediately, even if it's just a one off session with a counselor. In North America, many universities will have psychology students working as counselors for a small fee, and it's a good place to start (especially if you're young and don't have much money) and get an objective opinion on where you can find further help.

Sometimes it doesn't take very many appointments to assess what needs to be done and you can take back control over your life. Find help if you need it. Recovery doesn't have to be hard or scary. You can do it.

@Sem I can relate to this quite a lot but there are no professional help in my country. Fufufufufu.

@criver She doesn't even really need those physical activities... might even worsen her current state tbh. Based on the few chapters 1-9) and from what I can tell, this person is facing an existential crisis and is contemplating suicide. They find work a hassle and serious pain in the ass (ch 1-3). They also lack self-confidence and self-worth. (ch 4-9). People like these generally spend their days hoping the next day wouldn't come. As for the 'cure',
1) They need to find a better job
2) Find something they could be proud of doing. Make them feel needed.
3) Find something (or many things) to look forward to. It doesn't matter even if its as meaningless and stupid as "simply wanting to finish reading Iris Zero" and last i checked, that thing haven't updated in years. Once one thing is 'done' hopefully another one comes around to take their attention.

If this is happening to someone else such as family/friends, go and talk to them. Seek them out as they most likely won't come to you. Make them feel needed. Take care not to "brag" about your beautiful life cause they would feel shitty.

P.S (Might be the biased personal noob opinion of someone who DIDN'T study psychology but I once had suicidal thoughts+existential crisis similar to these in ch 1-9 so I probably know what I am talking about)

P.S.S Councelors are probably a great idea if they exist. They don't always exist and expecting someone with suicidal thoughts to go to a counselor independently is like asking for a meteor shower.

@Nep what @Criver says have a really big theorical sustent, in case of mayor depresion, like the girl in this manga, physical activities are a really good treatment that complement the psycological and farmaceuthic treatment, thought those last two are the most important, in case of suicidal idea is really necesary compensate it wiht farmaceuthic treatment.

@Sem Why would someone who relates to this need to go find “professional help”? It’s pretty normal to question the meaning of life since it ends.

@Dizeros Well. My previous job was tiring enough for me to say 'fk exercise lemme sleep/play games/watch tv/eat something different from somewhere further away' (on top of failing badly at my job). It is a job where i wake up 7 in the morning, prepare myself and work until 7 at night, then prepare the next day's work until whenever and sleep. Weekends? Compulsory unpaid work (such as preparing lessons/finishing someone else's homework). If I had bothered going exercising, I would have less time to 'finish' my work then get yelled at again during work. Didn't even have the chance for any other leisure entertainment such as video games or anything less healthy. It's a lifeless workfail, eat, sleep schedule.

Then I quit my job, do something more meaningful and less stressful (+family support). Life became significantly more beautiful. Sometimes thats all it takes to stop suicidal depression. Likewise, i noted that this MC doesn't have any family living with her.

Physical activities and counselling is good if one could afford/make the time and money for them. It would be even greater if 'counselling' works. I am speaking of the quality of counselling here and not the job itself. Some people may just give you real shitty advice. Not everyone lives in first world/common sense countries where things like counselling are deemed important. There are countries that don't place importance in this. We don't see them as "good jobs" so only few actually do this and most of them are unenthusiastic people more likely to send you further into depression.

I mean, my country has English teachers that can't speak English. I doubt they placed any effort in 'counselling' a word I first heard of after the age of 20.

More often than not you can always make time for physical activity. The fictional character in the manga obviously can also. It's just that people prioritize other things, not realizing that their body and mind NEEDS exercise and variety to function properly, and after they've slipped once they continue on a downwards spiral. That includes prioritizing tv, video games, internet, and yes - even a job, over their health. And sure enough this has consequences - you can literally die from complications caused by lack of enough physical activity, it's no wonder one would feel bad both physically and mentally when not fulfilling the basic requirements of their body.
Your problems start to look trivial after a good session of rock climbing, strenuous weight lifting, or just hiking in the mountains. Your mundane problems would be the last thing that's on your mind while squatting a weight at your body's limit, trying to find the next foothold while rock climbing, or just enjoying the view of that one frozen mountain lake while hiking.
The main issue is that people do not realize this, or simply decide to prioritize something else over their basic heath needs, which leads to a negative feedback loop.
Do yourself a favour and take care of your body - it's your body after all, and it's supposed to serve you for the rest of your life. They should really put physical activities above basic hygiene in terms of importance, so people would start to realize the importance of that. Your diet also strongly affects your mental and physical state. Needless to say, the typical western diet high in sugar and processed foods is garbage, and there is plenty of research evidence to back this up.

@Dizeros While I agree with you for the most part, I believe that drugs should be a last resort for when all else fails. There are enough cases of people killing themselves due to taking drugs that were supposed to "cure" their depression, that it's not even funny. Not to mention that a symptomatic treatment does not fix the underlying complex of problems. People however like low effort "magical" solutions to their problems, not realizing that those are not actual solutions, are only temporary, or have side-effects. The average person doesn't need pills to function properly.

I'm not taking about people who are reading this and going "big same," but the people who are reading this and seeing that it directly reflects their own lifestyle. Depression and anxiety often worsen when left alone for long periods of time, especially if the person in question is isolating themselves, and it can be life threatening. Being able to recognize the difference between depression and just feeling bummed out means people can admit it's a larger problem and find pertinent help, since depression is often not something you can pull yourself out of easily.

@Keetonman thx, i am really bad writing in english haha.

@Nep I agree with what @criver say xD

@criver of course, I also think like that, and for that, any pharmaceutical treatment must be parallel to a psychological treatment, but at the beginning of pathologies such as major depression with suicidal idea, a pharmaceutical treatment is really needed to compensate the patient. As you say, the drug alone does not create any changes.

Perhaps, but this doesn't apply to everyone. I won't speak for this fictional character since she is created solely to be depressed regardless of anything but there are those whose job include 'physical activity'. It may not be leisure exercise like jogging but there are also depressed people with jobs like moving furniture, construction (lots of cranes now so i am not too sure about this.) and a few others. Jobs that require more brawn than brains.

As for time, the setting is Japan, a place known for many black companies, lack of free time, death from overwork. I am pretty sure exercise would come in handy if the person still has enough time after doing all their chores, getting that much needed extra sleep, watching their diet on top of that.

Note that i am NOT disagreeing with exercise in general. I simply believe that exercise and counselling CANNOT apply to everyone due to varying circumstances. On the other hand, having parental/friend support could work as an alternative (provided the person isn't a friendless orphan) while having a reason to NOT jump off a skyscraper could apply to basically everyone.

Lastly, your personal body health wouldn't matter if you commit suicide and light jogging did nothing for my mental health because i can't stop thinking about that pile of work I left unfinished while exercising. (I wouldn't know where to find rock climbing and a mountain/beautiful lake. Also pretty sure the things i need to do to keep my job and therefore keep myself fed is not mundane.)

Do yourself a favour and take care of your body - it's your body after all, and it's supposed to serve you for the rest of your life. Based on the solutions and example you give, I am quite certain you are from the West. Possibly one of the first world countries. Let me first say that some third world countries are pretty shitty. Also, after I changed job I had plenty of time to exercise. Not those strenuous ones like rock climbing since I don't have the interest (and i don't think there is one here) but enough. As for my diet, I eat plenty of vegetables even when I was suicidal since like veggies more than meat when it comes to the local food here so there is no need to worry about my physical health. My mental health have also improved a lot since I no longer feel like a waste of oxygen. Thanks for worrying about us.

P.S what is the standard vegetable diet in the west? Please don't tell me they are all salad. Those things are the epitome of lazy dishes.

@Dizeros Didn't understand what you were saying at first till criver's reply. There are actually things like anti depression drugs? Sounds scary tbh.

@Nep I'll address your points starting from the ones I believe are objectively wrong and I'll work my way up to the things that I agree with.

1) Parental/friend support is orthogonal to exercise - so no, one is not an alternative to the other.

2)
Lastly, your personal body health wouldn't matter if you commit suicide
Obviously, but my point was never that you exercise so you would look nice after you are dead. The point is that exercise is beneficial in order to avoid a mental state leading to suicide, or even just dying from purely physiological causes having to do with your lack of physical activity.

3) There are very few people that actually "have no time for exercise". In most cases it's just wrong priorities. And the context in which I brought this up, concerns fictional characters having more than enough time for exercise. Even taking into account your comment about "black companies" - nobody can overwork you except yourself, the most a company can do is fire you.

4) The fact that there are people that get "enough" physical activity throughout their working day, but are depressed nevertheless, doesn't disagree with my point - they would be worse off without the exercise.

exercise did nothing for my mental health because i can't stop thinking about that pile of work I left unfinished while exercising.
I recommend very heavy exercise where you simply do not have the option of thinking about work. You simply don't have the option to think about trivial stuff while weightlifting at your body's limits, or as mentioned rock climbing.
