@icekatze I think that this manga chose this aspect to be "realistic", the mc can't do much as a civilian, and being a knight might give him more power to intevene in stopping the coming war, being a civilian in this scenario wouldn't help him achive his objective. Though I think he will find some incoviniences and will end up dropping out of the knights

why would you want to join the knights? not only are you worth far more than any of them but i doubt they have any worthwhile knowledge for you not to mention this means you are taking a side and it's against the woman you claim to love.

Just like some of the people in the comments noticed joining the knights is Erik's most realistic chance at gaining some influence and information gathering capabilities. I don't know if there's even an institution like an adveturer's guild in this world, but a random pheasant going around and casually saving the kingdom is just impossible.

As for Tina, she's a teenager in love, give her a break, being foolish a bit is alright.
