They are needed for story progression, but at least this isn't just exposition. It's not just backstory but also Philo is experiencing it in realtime (actually Im not sure if thats the right word in this case) so it is still also a continuation of the story at the same time.I hate backstories so much man.
We've been over his "my stats are shit" thing already. Half of the time a backstory is just there to kill off a character or kill any illusion of mysticism. Sure it can be done properly but here? Meh.They are needed for story progression, but at least this isn't just exposition. Yeah we have been over it, thats not the reason why it's being shown though, its to show how it effected him and to show why he's the way he is now. This is the where he gets his dreams crushed and finds out that he can't follow in his family's footsteps, and as a really small child is forced to come to terms with it. Have we seen it before, sure (MHA is probably the most popular recent example I can think of), but its still an important story element. And as I said previously it's not just for us to learn its Philo also learning about it, as if she was there, not just hearing about it second hand. She up until this point didn't realize why he was so adamant about becoming stronger other then to find his mother. Also she may realize why some of the teasing that she had done in the past was out of line. We also are not killing off a character by showing backstory, in fact its quite the opposite, although there is the possibility we have "seen" the character before. We've been over his "my stats are shit" thing already. Didn't we already know this? They keep hammering on about him being useless. My point was that we didn't really need this since we can put 2 and 2 together. Like "man that kid has low self esteem cause of his stats something happened when he was younger obviously!" kinda deal. I'll just have to disagree with the need to show a backstory to a shallow character in a manga whose main appeal is TnA. Specially since he is the worst thing out of his own manga IMO.Yeah we have been over it, thats not the reason why it's being shown though, its to show how it effected him and to show why he's the way he is now.
NP. That's what the comment sections are for!Sorry for my long response to what was originally a short comment, but being as strong as a response as you gave I felt like I needed to respond in kind.
Unfortunately with some of the comments I've had to answer in the past, you can't assume the reader actually understands anything. I also disagree that he's the worst character, granted yes I'm biased obviously, he is the straight man in the story and every other characters are the funny wo/man. The only other straight man currently in the story (not included lavis mom), is Lang. As he's written as a foil in most of the slapstick humor and has most of the drama portions of the story The only issue writing wise I have with him is in some situations he acts older than he should. But then again he is trying to make up for his weaknesses and that's why he puts up a very strong older front. If anything I'd say he's more of a standard shounen protagonist. But within his few full chapters of we've had I think he's progressed faster than most.Didn't we already know this? They keep hammering on about him being useless.
