That varies. Some novels have where Nobles can very strongly 'request' adventurers for quests, provided they're either specialists on that type of quest or of a sufficient rank, but in others the adventurer's guild itself has that power.

Very few novels have settings where not the nation, not the nobility and not the adventurer's guild management can demand adventurers to complete tasks (excluding the emergency tasks when something is invading that particular town), so expect some of them to do it. How they go about it varies though. The only novels where that is a possible thing is usually where some adventurers are extremely powerful and known to have ... persuaded those people to not bother them or other adventurers for anything other than standard quests, or other rare reasons.

@JavelinJoe aren't adventurers technically mercenaries already they do body guard work they do collecting and disposal of bandits for money so yeah their already mercenaries.

It was really a pointless choice... Unless the author decides that for whatever reason he'll forever refuse to rank up, there's no way he wouldn't immediately clear the requirements to rank up in just a few days. Might as well stay as a Rank C or D, whatever is the highest he can go without being restricted by a guild. Unless having a high rank makes it so he can't party with the girl, there's really no reason to go with this.

He only needed to be registered, and thats what he got. Getting a higher rank would be better, like D? Maybe, but that already limits him a bit and thats exactly what he doesnt wants. Let the dude free, geez.

He can go and do shit of higher ranks if he see fit on his way. And no matter what he does, the rewards dont seem to interest him anyway. Its also not like they'd deny him a reward if he shows proof of his feats, you guys are too hung up on rankings for no reason.

You are right, I was saying that they are treated like "purchased" mercenaries. Meaning that they are treated as if they already are at the disposal of their "owner"/"client". Mercenaries tend to be able to pick their own fights for whatever the reason may be. But they need to be in agreement first off, to be paid and to work for the client. Some systems dont bother with this and just assume they already are "obligated " to serve them, without caring what the person wants to do was my point.

Yah, no, I doubt the guild would have that bad of a system... the rank should be used to show the adventurers abilities... the restrictions should come only if the Adventurer gains certain benefits... not just having the rank...

There should be other ways, rather than just forcing that responsibility... for instance, making adventurers with authority, who get a stable income to normally keep the peace and stuff, but are also forced to take quests and might even earn extra per quest compared to the average adventurer... and maybe access to resources that normal adventurers wouldn't gain....

Heck, instead, the MC should ask what responsibilities he would have if he levels up instead of just declining... seeing what level he could reach while also having freedom...

I mean, there is no way that there is no strong person who refuses to follow orders amongst adventurers.. the MC is enemies right now with a dude that does bad stuff...

This is just a lazy way to have the MC underestimated and keep him F rank...

WIth the low power lvl of everyone in the world, even D monster material seem to let MC rake in the dosh.
At that point, doing quests is just a bother compared to strolling around and murdering random creatures for their parts.

Since he's a member of the guild, it gives him a place to offload all the shit he gathers and the payout for materials doesn't seem to depend on rank.
I'm just saying, it does make sense but I wish MC had some more clearly defined goals other than not being forced to do shit.

On another note, I'm starting to understand now how this guy can be so fucking dense and made it to Magic Emperor and Sword Emperor. He just cluelessly bulldozes shit without any ounce of thought or common sense and just goes with the flow of what the reward is. Although, at this point in his lives he's only a tad less dense than before and has learned that titles = attachment & obligation so he dodges it.

@FRASH_18 yeah I seen a lot of isekai's that the Mc get straight up blackmailed/forced to do a a lot of missions/politics shit, so having freedom is probably the best, plus he spent literally two life time doing that shit, ..I also enjoy manga where the Mc say he's the lowest rank while beating the shit out of people who are like A+ rank lloll
