Envy is wanting to take what others have, Jealousy is wanting others to not take what you have. So, once again, the "Sage" wants the girl for himself and promptly "removes" the competition without the consent or acknowledgement of the heroine. Except the competition this time is her brother, which, for now, we can only assume blood relations. So how or why you're envious of her brother is a little... beyond me.

In the novel nothing bad happened to the sage so far apart from being treated like a speck on the wall by the hero sister (who is a lot more deadpan than in the manga, has a little yan streak, and is a huge brocom), and minor inconveniencies because Red/Guideon was the one in charge of the logistics and other trival but day to day usefull stuffs that the "elite" of the hero party can't be bothered with.

@Fuko : he got a starting level bonus but no usefull skill to go with it, the advantage of his class is a huge headstart but the incovenient is not having any skills ever (jack of all trades, master of none) and it's hard for him to grow in level because he is already mid-low level from the start, so when he got catched up in level he was outclassed by all the other member of the hero party (think about starting an RPG in the starting village with a character at level 30 that can't get any skill, he is god tiered at the start but he will almost never level up while the others grow fast and when you get to the mid game he get useless in battle because he has not skill and isn't great in anything)

I'm sorry if it got a little confusing, I was referring to the Sage with my second and third statement, so I'm neither envious nor jealous of anyone? but was merely stating my interpretation of the Sage's attitude towards the siblings/brother. Again I'm sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

It's not that cut and dry; I think it would be more accurate to say that jealousy has the additional usage of describing covetousness of a defended item or position (e.g. to "jealously guard" something).

However, being jealous of someone means exactly the same thing as being envious of them, i.e. wishing to have what the other person already has.

(Additional nitpick: In the general case, it's not necessarily "wanting to take", as much as "wanting to have".)

Sorry, I realize this doesn't matter that much, but the pedant in me felt the need to step in and say things ~w~
