Oh you actually didn't read everything (words), it literally mentions in writing how they went through HUNDREDS of battles together, there was also really obvious mutual attraction between them. So much even the sister notices when they say goodbye. There's actually been a lot of context you've missed during the flash backs. You probably don't know what love is like, it's complex and the author has show a lot of small interactions that subtly and not so subtly show their growing affection.

In world building, there's always some attention to detail. Every fantasy world I've read about has some form of marriage, but they never say what it could be. Is it a big wedding, then how do the poor deal with it? Heinlein mentioned this in Glory Road: Oscar and Scar's "wedding" consisted of saying some vows and jumping over a sword.

I like the idea of a bracelet versus a ring, though. Still, the world building needs to include the actual marriage... and how Ruty will deal with that.
