Bets on one of the other Marebitos actually being an Electrical Engineer?

I find it odd that nobody has combined science and magic, the world would advance so much faster if they did.

@gaigous IKR, with magic being such an efficent energy converter, you could pretty much replace electricity as the conveyance and use stuff like mana for applied force.

Instead of a fuel powered Dynamo, you could use a mana stone enchanted with a movement spell to generate infinite energy.

@boag Not to mention communication, who needs a network of telecommunications towers when you have the magical equivalent of a tin can telephone.

I totally get you, why do you need excavators when you can just magic up a hole, I wish more isekais tried to abuse it a little, instead of just going with the crop rotation / steel / paved roads memes.

@boag If I agreed anymore back this would be a circlejerk, but here are my two cents, when an MC is a blank slate they can't really have ideas of their own because that would add substance to the character, everything has to be a pre-packaged concept that anyone would know, creativity outside of the character design, setting, and system isn't allowed, it's all lazy writing....but at least we have fanservice!

Never understood the obsession people have with racial purity, always love watching them crash and burn in manga

@gaigous I have always wondered why more authors never combine science and magic more just like this manga. In my opinion it offers way more options story telling wise...especially when the setting is early 20th century tech

@gaigous @boag I agree with you two about the idea of fusing magic and technology, authors should use this concept more, but just to point it out in the dwarf arc the king mentioned something like that: with technology 2+2 is always 4, but with magic this same operation can be 4, 10, 100 any sort of result. So what I take from that is that magic in this world isn't something that would allow itself be used freely, sure that if you take that golem as a hint that was some time when magic was more accessible, but who knows how it is now.

In this chapter I have some inkling of why the hasas were so adamant in getting the ambrosias, Oni is a species in fantasy that I like but I feel that in this ark i will hate them a lot.

My understanding is that sciences are super new to their world. So the ability to combine them is something you cant expect overnight, especially if they are coming from a person who only knows of their original way.

Also, most readers find the combination of science and magic appalling, as "magic" has been used as such a crutch in the past. So when you have a Magic Bus or a Magic Smartphone people call "lazy writing."
Even something like a Magic Gun that gets explained on its inner machinations gets looked down upon.

TL:DR Magic and Science doesn't really mesh well with a majority of readers.

@firefox1234 The middle ages have been done to death, and the Age of Extremes might as well be called the golden age of innovation, so I really can't think of a better setting for magic and technology.

Another issue would be the "dark elven" empires love of science and prejudice against anything from the age of gods(including magic).

That is the depressing reality we find ourselves in, most authors don't combine the two for the same reason they're bad in the first place, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

@alacaelum
I remember that scene now, thanks for the reminder, I also imagine it would be very difficult to justify gathering a bunch of scientists/mages together to study the fusion of magic and technology during an age of war where immediate results are demanded by each country's leadership.

read negima if you want a good mesh magic + science. but, if i think about it there are several old series that also did a good combination of magic and science into their technology. lol i cant tell a single name of it. maybe i remember it wrong

@gaigous From all the years reading fantasy/scify media the ideia that i make of magic is that is frequently a form of energy that has some sort of "conscience" and this detail makes it be really hard to manipulate and study, even those examples of magc energy that have a "desire" to be used wont just permit any run-of-the-mill person use it, these characteristics makes magic a interesting thing to study but like you said war demands quick results, but it isnt a surprise when you discover that even during times like these that experiments for more complex understanding of powers like those are being made so i expect that not just that marebito on Dala that has advanced tecnology but there is somewhere mages or other types of ability users developing these possibilitys.

@Dezaki Negima was an awesome one, and yeah there are indeed a ton of old goodies hidden away, giant list incoming:

Mahouka.
ZNT dabbled a bit.
Kiritsugu(Fate/Zero) is the poster child for using both in combat.
Code Geass(Loved it, but then everyone did)
Hellsing(The only people who didn't like it are vegan pussies)
Trigun(Classic)
Chrno Crusade(Classic)
Devil Survivor 2(SMT and Persona)

Magic systems vary, in some cases being able to use magic is restricted to bloodlines so not everyone can just cast spells. Technology on the other hand is simpler ... you dont need to understand how it works in order to build things so overall technology is more reliable as everyone can use it without training, you dont need to know anything behind how a gun works to point it and pull the trigger but the same thing cannot be said about magic, even in settings were magic is "easier" to access it still requires training and even magical items such as wands take significant effort to create and cannot be mass produced.

To add to that, they only recently became like that, thanks to the otherworlder in their kingdom who has completely altered their ideals. I'm thinking he is a hardcore man-of-science/atheist.
This has occurred at least within Lord Whats-his-name's time of duty.
As he knows to fear the gods, but thinks they need to now be disposed of because it's the supposed "age of man".
No one born into the atheist mindset, nor with the atheist character trope, would know to fear the power of a godspawn. They would usually consider themselves the better and oft look down upon it.

I've actually encountered three examples similar to that, the two obvious ones being Fate(Nasuverse) and star wars(midichlorians), and the other was a book series called Wizards by John Booth.

I prefer magic systems similar to D&Ds where people can pick a path to power and attain mastery with enough knowledge, skill, and/or effort, so that's probably why I haven't encountered more with sentient magic(mana, force, etc).

Also very true, I mean, shit, half of our technological progress was researched, tested, and produced during wartime, so that would be a given.

@alacaelum I agree, i mean just using magic as an energy source replacement would do wonders, If anything Mass Effect (before it got ruined) was really good at this concept, of using a pretty much magical energy source to power Science.
Hell under all the fluff, knigts and magic really is the ideal, although i wish it had a better plot.

@Vasqueztion from what weve seen, this world in the middle of the industrial revolution, and they are jumping tech trees because people with knowledge are coming in and info dumping centuries worth of scientific advancements.

@Dezaki I wanted to like Negima, but the battle harem got in the way of my enjoyment.

@Vasqueztion I really like the fedora tipping dark elf dude, we really do need more "No Gods, No Masters" characters in Isekai.

@gaigous The amount of shit you can do in DnD with low level spellcasters are insane, I remember someone running through the mage spell lists, and coming up with a way to make a rail gun with just a couple of low level spells.
