Al's already stated that he went off to fight pirates to protect Lily.
But he's oblivious to the fact that in "protecting her", he's also actively "losing her".
And as I said initially - I think one sticking point that will factor into the narrative between them, is that Al has always failed to see Lily for who she is, and has always failed to understand what it is she wants from him and for them both. And that's with her telling him, repeatedly - but he just ...doesn't hear it.
As for the "mentally unwell" line that's been getting thrown around for the last couple of chapters - I push back against it because I don't think it's substantiated thus far.
She's energetic, she's got a childish streak even into young adulthood, but calling her "mentally ill" feels like a lazy writing-off of her character when we're still getting everything established in how she's gotten to where she has, over the years that were skipped between the first chapter and what's followed.
It's easy to say "bitch be crazy", but it's dismissive and unfair, this early in.
If the narrative itself portrays that she's actually insane or something, then I'll amend my judgment in light of that added context - but until then, I think it's premature and, honestly, a little problematic to just label the female lead in light of that.
