realistically, we should have made it to Mars already.
so getting more space missions would be nice.
true the fact that its been over half a century since the moon landing and we have yet to set foot on mars astounds me a very big dream of mine is to witness the moment we set foot on another planet

Last 50 years of space exploration will be looked back on by future generations as the equivalent of the vikings not settling America or the loss of the knowledge for Roman concrete. (we only figured it out fairly recently, but not recently enough to use it for infrastructure)

I think the question is 'what's the payoff?' Given the level of investment that would be needed to get a team there and back, I'm not sure going just to drop off a plaque is necessarily the best use of time and energy, and the idea of 'settlement' on another planet could be worked out using the moon much easier to start.

Honestly, if you want to do something amazing, my vote would be to build a telescope array (both visible light and radio/X-ray) on the dark side of the moon.

we start with a few space habitats, let the settlers eventually evolve independently and then watch as they start disassembling the rest of the solar system to create a Matryoshka brain.
think of the crazy goon sesh they're gonna be capable of doing once they turn the sun into a giant generator.

Personally, Mars is just so overrated by Elon Musk.
It is just a desert planet, very far away from Earth and has no known exploitable resources on there.

Yeah, it would be cool to have cities and bases on Mars.
But what is real benefit of doing it?
Prestige?
Sure and what else??

Edit: I think colonizing the Moon is more lucrative that Mars.
Sure, it doesn't have oil on it but it has so many raw material just waiting for us to pick up.

I am suddenly less interested about mars

start with the moon first. also, if science fiction is anything to go by, we can't trust the martian to not erupt in a civil war for independence the moment we slightly terraform it. so we'll just settle for space habitats and the moon at first. once we figure out FTL communications and logistics, we can begin to look at other options.

or alternatively, we can colonize a system containing a neutron star or any of the other cool ones and build a Dyson beam on them.
boom, instant superweapon that can turn any star into a supernova.
imagine the look on the faces of the rebel forces
They will laugh because you just made a weapon that has 100% of failure (which means death of your colony and beyond) if everything is not setup correctly.

you talkin mad shit for someone in death ray distance.
sure would be a shame if your star blew up and you'd only realize it 14 minutes later :meguusmug:
