Yes, sometimes a Hostess would "date" a client they meet from the bar, but a lot of these kind of bars (especially the less shadier ones) don't encourage that. It's generally up to the hostess if they want to do that, and some bars would fire them if they do.

Either way, no nookie here. Hostess bars are like this so that they can operate without running afoul of the law. It's an incredibly rare thing if a Hostess will take you to a hotel later on for fun times. The only way that happens is in two cases:

1) The Hostess thinks your hot and wants to make a little extra side hustle. (Very rare - you have to keep in mind she probably serves dozens of guys a month, so you'd have to be hitting her directly in her "fuck yes!" spots before she'd even consider it.)

2) It's a shady hostess bar where the women are all prostitutes and probably even illegal immigrants who are being threatened with deportation by their employer if they don't shut up and make with the money making.

Back when I was in the Navy, we'd call hostess bars "Buy me drink!" bars because they'd drink along with you. The drinks are ridiculously overpriced because, as you figured out, they're pretty much renting the time the hostess spends with them. And you usually have to buy a certain number of drinks over a certain period of time. Like one drink will get you 45 minutes with a Hostess or something like that. After that, they won't ask you to leave, per se, but the Hostess will politely up and leave, thanking you for your patronage.

And as the title implies, you're not only paying for your drink, but theirs as well.

I think you'll find that medieval taverns and bath houses had more or less the same "service" as modern japanese hostess bars.

Pretty girls to serve you ( and make you spend more...) , but no prostitution as such. That was done by other Ladies of Negotiable Affection. Who often were "serving girls" as well, but didn't ply their actual trade Inside.
The "Hostesses" themselves were pretty much untouchable. They were the billboard of the tavern, and you did very much not "ruin" them, unless you wanted some Unofficial Justice visited upon you by either the bouncers, local peeps, or even travellers.

Quite a few of them had a sort of Idol status, and had songs and rhymes dedicated to them even.

That system itself tracks back to Roman travelling Tavernas, so has a looooong history.

Turns out monsters have inventory as a skill "technically" and by taming them, you can use their inventory to hold stuff. The stronger the monster, the more inventory space they have.
