The conclusion of this past relationship could further color how she's viewed her current "straight" friend Woo-hui. It's probably not a coincidence that she's remembering this girl right after her semi-argument with Woo-hui.

We are in a memory of Kang-Jiho. While walking back in the rain she remembers her old friend. This is our introduction to her. It's been said before (and is the same with pretty much all long strip comics), black background normally signifies a memory or flashback.
