it's not the first, and it certainly wont be the last, but this one hits much harder than all the site strikes ive seen in my time as a reader.

sure we're losing alot of big name, recognizable series, but seeing a ton of series that never would have seen light of day if not for the work of scanlation groups and mangadex itself, just getting fully nuked back into obscurity is depressing.
Ironically enough a good 50% of why I found MangaDex useful was the manga pages themselves, like raws links and Japanese volumes listing, plus the usual MangaUpdates link as well. It was neatly organized. Oh well, we'll bounce back, piracy never dies.

Any updates on a list for the manga that got nuked?
Sad to see a manga page harassed again by copyright.

Like how is it copyright if the original language was removed with the typeset english ones. Does the fan translator need to invert every page just to avoid the 1:1 image

What I deeply despise about DMCA is that it have a "strike first ask forgiveness later" procedure. When reciving one you are BOUND to remove the content in a short time and can only fill a complaint after you complied. The requestor isn't required to give any proof a content belong to them or to one of their contractors, it's you (the company or the uploader user) that have to provide the proof the requestor is in the wrong, and worse there is no penality for improper reports. This is a complete judicial aberration and a complete reversal of the burdern of PROOF, that is central to modern judicial systems. ALso DMCA is an USA law, yet people, and companies, somehow become convinced is applicable worldwide. IT isn't, while some countries, and actors do by custom (but not by law) on them, it's however untested whetever non compliance would stand in court, and some counties (like Bulgaria, Romania or Luxemburg) are know to not act on them (becouse they have other laws, and these procedures will infringe upon other national laws)

Making a false DMCA claim is a felony. I never seen a corpo actually punished for doing it tho.

Can we at least keep the chapter upload timelines (with no pictures) and the chapter discussion links? And maybe update these over time for new chapters, even if the chapters themselves arent hosted - like we do with official translations now, with links to them?

What makes mangadex so great is the community, imo. Going forward, maybe this can be a good place to aggregate information about various manga and for scanlators to communicate with the community, but for the actual scanlations to be hosted elsewhere, maybe via torrent or mirrors? It would also be good for someone to upload what was lost to some mirror/torrent. Things need to be preserved somewhere at least.

Only when with the scope of fraduolent gains from what I understood (and some of these were mostly the only ones that got in court). Good luck when the takedown is made using non existing entities (like these https://taxpolicy.org.uk/2024/02/17/the-invisible-campaign-to-censor-the-internet/). And in the scope of DMCA of extra-us origin good luck trying them in courts.
Also whike I see that the law impose civil liability on the fake infringers, . I do see it's punishable under federal law making false counterclaims tho.

It's such an awful punch in the gut for the worldwide manga community. I do wonder what got into those publishers. Surely they do realize that doing this won't increase their sales in any significant way and they might even fall, because the word-of-mouth promotions of their manga will plummet.

From a technical side of things, what happens to the chapters that are taken down? Are they instantly gone and deleted forever, or can they be preserved somewhere, just not visible to the public? (for legal reasons it is a hypothetical question) I am worried, because for example Kingdom was hit too and Sense Scans doesn't even have a website anymore, so I don't know if they would even have the early chapters still saved on their side, since we're at 800+.

Damn. This sucks but also we shouldn’t have been scanlating licensed stuff so like hellloooo karma! Kodansha is still a dick for what they did to Konishi with the anime but… welp. Them’s the breaks.

ETA: Wish they’d gone after aggregators that scrape our stuff and charge for it, though, that was fucked up. Still, we’re stealing from authors so… spankings are inevitable. It’s been real, y’all.

I seriously hope this isn't the final moments of Dex. This is literally my favorite and most accessed website and it hurts BAD to think it might fade into oblivion.

I REALLY hope we can bounce back from this.

Define bounce back, get back what was removed? Cause mods already said it won't be.

With so much stuff removed a lot of people will just move on, and since anything might get dmca at any moment I imagine many groups will also move on.

Even if mangadex survive it'll be a shadow of its former self.

Unless of course they change the site to a country where they can ignore dmca, but that ain't happening.

I just hope they really hurry with that in built way to export your list of read chapters even if the chapter itself no longer exists. People with hundreds of manga on their lists won't have to sit around trying to remember them all and exactly what chapter they were on when digging around other sites. Ultra demoralizing stuff to do.

Back to the dark ages and the Old Ways...

I meant bounce back to at least keeping the site alive and the groups somewhat active, since for all intents and purposes inevitably the Dex will never go back to its peak and is doomed to live in fear of another mass DMCA.

Seems it's back to the dark age of combing through aggregators to find series after all.
