Situation with spoilers in comments to most new mangas.

Over the past year or two, the situation in comments to most popular or hot mangas has become increasingly unbearable, in regards to the spoilers posted in the comments.

Almost every single new manga that appears and gains even a little popularity has its comments chock-full of spoilers, both tagged and untagged, with zero prompt or reasoning behind it besides "I've read LN/WN, lemme just share what's gonna happen" as if that makes sense somehow. Sometimes it's tagged as spoilers but in such a shitty way that you can instantly guess what's going to happen from the context: like replying with "oh I wouldn't get attached to her if I were you, she
dies in the next story arc
" to a person discussing a character. And 100% of the time another user replies to a spoiler with a reaction of his own, untagged of course, like "I can't believe they would deal with her just like that". Being 'vague' is just trying to get off on a technicality, cuz anyone with a brain could surmise the gist of the spoiler with just a glance.

It honestly makes these threads a pain to get through, and in fact makes you wanna disengage from the discussions altogether. Cuz no matter how much you ask people to tag spoilers, there will be people who don't, because the general has reached the point of just saying whatever with no repercussions. And also if 80% of the comments are discussing LN, it's hard to skim through them to get to the normal people reacting to the chapter. At that stage, what is even the point of a 'manga discussion'? One of the many examples is this manga's chapter threads.

So the question is: Is this situation something mangadex moderators/staff are okay with? Am I just yelling at clouds? Do mods plan to do anything about it? Because it's pretty bad, much worse than before.

Solution
We don't know to act without reports. Judging from what I can see in the forum report queue, nobody has bothered to report anything relating to the mentioned title in a while

Ideally, reporting would be the way on this. Realistically, this is going to be slow at best, so a few other options ordered from practical but boring to sociopathic and potentially bannable*:

  1. Don't read chapter threads on adaptations.
  2. Don't read adaptations.
  3. Block offending users so their comments don't show.
  4. Strive for an early post in chapter threads, and then update the comment with a heads up about spoilers appearing downthread. (Does nothing for you, but may save someone else.)
  5. Post your own incorrect spoilers to call all spoilers into question. ("Can't believe they become the pope in the next volume.")
  6. Figure out what other series the offending users read based on comments, and spoil things for them in those series (possibly with fictional spoilers).
  7. Start tagging offending users in unrelated series (bonus points for doing this in series with the 'pornographic' tag).
  8. Start tagging offending users in non-chapter forum threads (we always welcome fresh meat in the Lounge).
  9. Start tagging offending users on their profile page (or your profile page, if you prefer).
  10. Write and illustrate an original series in a style that would be allowed on MD about an MC who gets isekai'd into a world where they fight and defeat spoiler posters. Use names.
*I am full of bad ideas, so don't actually do anything after number 4. If you do any of those things and get banned for it, that's totally on you.

Wow that is a read, I just dove in to read the spoilers.
Yeah, definitely would ruin the experience, if you got any of the first commentors post revealed to you due to other folk quoting and commenting about it and not spoiling their posts.

But this really is an issue. Some people don't hide their spoilers well enough, just cut off mid sentence and then continue with it and you'll figure out the context if you have atleast 1½ braincell.

But really aside from reporting and hoping that mods catch it, what can you do?

I guess mods could have a preannounced "hammer week" when they give harsher smacks for infringing on the rules to teach some manners to the unruly ones?
Spare the rod, as they say.

Some time ago when I tried to report spoilers, I got a warning to me instead that it was technically tagged, even though it was obvious anyway. And to add to that, when the 'discuss LN in manga comments' culture is so pervasive, going through dozens upon dozens of comments and reporting them all is not just draining and ruins the mood, but would also probably get you banned for 'abusing report function' or something.

I have so many people on ignore that on some pages, there will be only 1 comment left - out of 50 or however many it shows by default per thread page :meguu:

As for what can be done, I don't really know. My methods would probably be far too draconian and/or unrealistic. Maybe following reddit's r/anime episode discussion method and auto-creating a separate thread for LN/spoiler discussion would the be way to go. That way, all these people would have their corner where they can discuss whatever they want freely, while the usual threads would have a 0-tolerance on anything related to future events.
