That could be a point of view to consider if there wasn't mitsumi right there in the center of the story who isn't described as attractive and yet still gets treated well because she's not a sperg and understands empathy. Ujie is the type of character to complain about people discriminating over appearances but in the end he's the one who cares most about looks (like that's why he has a crush on yasaka) and he's the one who discriminates the mostHe's an unpopular, unattractive geek who's experienced first hand how hypocritical others are and how differently people are treated for something like their physical appearance or not fitting in with a group. Shima, again, has his own problems but Ujiie is right in that he doesn't have to worry about others rejecting him in the same way Ujiie does because his looks mean that people are generally, as far as he can see, going to give him a pass on things or want to be around him.
He doesn't try to understand others because he's convinced to be in the right and it's that part of his personality that we see evolving in those chapters, the last sentence of the chapter being a clear proof of that.
